Singing in the Wire, 2013

Singing in the Wire is a lyric from ‘Wichita Lineman’, which is sung from the perspective of a telecommunications engineer. The letters are made from stenciled limestone and the font is derived from a sixteen-segment digital display. In making this work, McNulty was imagining the lineman listening to the signal, trying to make out what someone was saying through ‘some woolly buzz’.

Dennis McNulty is an artist and musician living in Dublin. Beginning with detailed research of various kinds, and informed by his studies in psychoacoustics, his artworks often take hybrid forms, drawing on aspects of cinema, sculpture, sound and performance.
